Vermont Survives Late Charge by UAlbany, 2-1, in America East Conference Women's Soccer Action

Albany, N.Y. ?  Emily Perrin's fourth goal of the season following a corner kick midway through the first half led the University of Vermont to a 2-1 victory over the University at Albany in women's soccer action at Varsity Field on Thursday afternoon. UAlbany outshot UVM by a 14-9 clip in the second half and had numerous chances to at least even the score and force overtime, but the Catamounts survived several late charges by the Great Danes and held on for the one-goal victory.

Vermont (4-12-1, AE 2-4-1) got on the scoreboard in the third minute of the match. Jessica Becker dribbled the ball down the left sideline and crossed it inside the box to Lexie Kaknes on the right. Kaknes took a low shot that was redirected in by a UAlbany defender into the far post for an own goal.

The Catamounts doubled their lead in the 24th minute after being awarded a corner kick which was taken by Kaknes from the right side. The ball was initially touched by a Great Dane defender, but Perrin was there to fire it to the back of the net. Vermont held on to its two-goal advantage heading into the break.

After being outshot 8-5 in the first half, the second frame was dominated by UAlbany (3-16-0, AE 1-6-0). One minute after entering the match, Makenzie Baratta had a chance to net her first career goal when she had a one-on-one opportunity against UVM goalkeeper Eliza Bradley. However, Bradley came out to the top of the box and forced Baratta to shoot the ball high in the 61st minute. Less than ten minutes later, Teresa Boring had a breakaway opportunity down the middle and slightly to the left. Her low shot got past Bradley, but UVM defender Kristina Miele was able to kick the ball away and to the right from about five yards away before it could cross the goal line.

The Great Danes cut the Catamount lead in half in the 77th minute on a corner kick. Katie Grant received a cross from Rebecca Lee and took a low shot from about 12 yards away on the right towards the near post. Bradley appeared to have made a save, but the referee ruled that the entire ball had crossed the goal line first. UAlbany took two more shots before the end of the match, but was unable to net the equalizer.

UAlbany's Amber Maisonet stopped five of the 17 shots taken by the Catamounts. UVM's Bradley made 11 saves on 19 chances to earn the victory.

The Great Danes will host UMBC in their final match of the season on Sunday at 1 p.m. Seniors Diana Barrera, Danielle Ethier and Maisonet will be honored for their contributions to the program prior to the match.
