Justin Miller joined UAlbany as the Director of Marching and Spirit Bands in the summer of 2022.  

He is currently a candidate for a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in euphonium performance at George Mason University working on his dissertation entitled “Stylistic Expansion of Euphonium Repertoire: Utilizing Electronic Timbre Transformation Effects to Perform Popular Styles of Music.” He also performs on and teaches trombone and tuba.  

He holds a Master of Music in Music Performance with a concentration in Euphonium from George Mason University, and he has a degree in K-12 Instrumental Music Education from the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He has studied privately under Paul Miller, Dan Eaton, and Dr. Derek Bromme, and currently studies under Dr. Mark Jenkins, Dr. Michael Nickens, and Dr. David Porter. 

Justin is an active performer and has performed with the George Mason Wind Symphony, George Mason Jazz Workshop Ensemble, George Mason Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, Dirty Gold Brass Band, George Mason Brass Ensemble, 8th Division Civil War Band, New Vybe and the Green Machine Pep Band.  

His arrangements have been featured in performances at George Mason. He spent three years marching with the world-class drum and bugle corps, the Cavaliers, from 2013-2015. He was one of the Horn Sergeants in the 2015 season.  

With the Cavaliers, he has studied with David McGrath, Michael Martin, Brad Hughes, Daniel Truman, Freddy Martin, and others. He was a featured performer at the George Mason University Honors Recital in 2018 and at the U.S. Army Band Tuba and Euphonium Conference with the George Mason Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble in 2019. 

He has taught athletic bands at the high school and collegiate level in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Virginia, Maryland, and New York — most notably as the visual caption head for the Thomas Jefferson High School Marching Colonials in 2019, as a graduate fellow for the George Mason Green Machine Ensembles from 2017-2022, and as the Brass Caption Head at the United States Naval Academy Drum and Bugle Corps from 2021-2022.  

He also writes marching band drills and teaches private lessons on euphonium, trombone, and tuba. 

Justin lives in Schenectady with his wife, Leah, and their dog, Wally.
