Banner’s Complete Game Effort Falls Short for Baseball

Score: NJIT 5, UAlbany 4 (10 inn.)

Location: Yogi Berra Stadium – Newark, N.J.

Records: UAlbany (2-14, 1-1 America East) | NJIT (7-11, 1-1 America East)

Short Story: The University at Albany baseball team rallied late to force extra innings but ultimately fell to NJIT on Saturday afternoon.

Coach Jon Mueller: "We were sloppy throughout the game and in the end, it hurt us. Dylan was a stud for nine innings and kept us in the game. We will look forward to the rubber game tomorrow."

Key Stats: How it Happened:
  • NJIT struck first in the opening inning, taking advantage of a throwing error before adding an RBI groundout to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Dylan Banner settled in on the mound for UAlbany, tossing nine innings while allowing just two earned runs and striking out seven to keep the Great Danes within reach.
  • The Highlanders added another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 3-0.
  • UAlbany broke through in the seventh inning. Levi McAllister doubled to start the frame and later scored on a fielder's choice by Kyle Stephens to cut the deficit to 3-1.
  • NJIT answered in the bottom half of the inning with an RBI single to push the lead back to 4-1.
  • The Great Danes rallied in the eighth. Patrick DeSarno and Michael Maggio drew walks before Cooper Loyal singled to load the bases. Luke Filippi followed with an RBI walk, and McAllister delivered an RBI single to make it 4-3. A wild pitch later in the inning brought home the tying run, evening the score at 4-4.
  • Banner returned to the mound and worked a scoreless ninth to send the game into extra innings.
  • In the 10th, Ethan Nardacci entered in relief and NJIT loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly brought in the winning run, sealing the 5-4 final.
Next: The Great Danes finish out the NJIT series tomorrow, March 22 at 11:00 AM.
