ALBANY, N.Y. - The University at Albany athletic programs are busy at home this week. Volleyball hosts their annual tournament, field hockey welcomes New Haven and Columbia, and men's soccer hosts Rhode Island.

The Great Danes opened the season with a 2-0 weekend against Hofstra (Aug. 29) and Wagner (Aug. 31). Junior Pilar Lorenzini led in the first weekend of action scoring half of the team's six goals. Graduate student Indy van Ek, sophomore Tessa Overgoor, and sophomore Sarah Salameh each added one goal. Fifth year Emma Peeters backed up the team in goal for all 120 minutes over the weekend.

New Haven is new to Division I and began the 2025 season with a loss at Bryant University. Cut short by a quarter, the Chargers only saw 45 minutes of action against the Bulldogs and fell 6-0. Eliza Caven recorded a defensive save while Cara Lambert (30 minutes) and Anne Marie Martin (15 minutes) shared time in goal.

The Great Danes enter their home opener after a strong start to the season at the Rocket Invitational. UAlbany swept Saint Francis behind 23 assists from Maria Olga Siapani and balanced scoring from Kendall Harris, Gabriella Karman, and Tori Wilson. Harris, Karman, and Wilson each tallied at least eight points, while Brooke Malek anchored the back row with 14 digs. 

Syracuse is in its second season under head coach Bakeer Ganesharatnam and will be looking to rebound after a 2-16 mark in ACC play last fall.

The all-time series is even at 1-1, with the most recent matchup a 3-0 UAlbany win in 2023.

ALZHEIMER'S AWARENESS GAME

The Great Danes will continue the week with their second consecutive home game against Columbia. In a six-goal weekend, graduate student Olivia Bell led with four assists - all of which came from penalty corners. Mara Küskes was behind Bell with two assists, also during penalty corners. Freshmen Lillian Willis and Jette Kurz saw their first collegiate points with an assist each.

Columbia will visit UAlbany for their first game of the season. In 2024, the Lions went 6-10 with a 3-4 record in Ivy League action. The 2024 season came to an end in the Ivy League semifinals with a loss to the number one seed, Princeton.

UAlbany holds the small series lead, 3-2. The Lions won the most recent game, 3-2, at Alumni Turf in September 2021. Alison Smisdom '25 and Lara Mortz scored in the one-goal decision.

UAlbany is coming off a week in which then went 1-1-0 with it's win coming at home against Central Connecticut University on Thursday, August 28, thanks to a header in the 77th minute from William Bruce. Alexander Clive leads the Great Danes with three points thanks to one assist against FDU and a goal against Long Island University. Defender Ethan Cook leads all field players in total minutes spent on the pitch with 270, having played the full 90 in all three games leading up to this point in the season. In the America East, The Great Danes rank tied for second in shots on goal (18) and third in shots (42) while Andre Navas ranks second in the conference amongst individuals for total shots (10).

 

Rhode Island with kickoff against Providence on Monday night at 7:00 PM prior to it's meeting with UAlbany. The Rams are 0-1-1 as of the afternoon of Monday, Sept 1, having tied Ioana 2-2 and losing to Bryant 2-1. Daniel Goba, Theo Harris and Parker Vasic have all scored one goal this season while Joel Bona and Brett Schwab lead URI's field players having individually each spent 180 total minute on the pitch. Goalkeeper Lenno Schmidt (0-1-1) has allowed four goals while making six saves in the Rams first two matches of the season.

 

This will be UAlbany and URI's seventh meeting with the Great Dane holding a slight 4-3 win-loss advantage over the Rams with URI having won the previous two matches, both in Kingston, R.I. UAlbany's last win against the Rams came back on September 21, 2021 where UAlbany won 3-2 in double-overtime.

The UAlbany women's volleyball team hosted Bryant at the PE Gym in Albany, N.Y. on Friday, October 18, 2024 for their annual Dig Pink match.

UAlbany closed the Rocket Invitational with another sweep, taking down Robert Morris in straight sets. Tori Wilson and Kendall Harris combined for 38 kills across the three matches, while Brooke Malek collected 36 digs and the Great Danes delivered 17 service aces for the weekend.

Cornell is coming off an 18-6 campaign in 2024 that ended in the Ivy League semifinals. 

The Great Danes hold a 3-1 edge in the all-time series, with the most recent meeting a four-set victory in 2023.

UAlbany’s weekend also showcased offensive efficiency and depth, as the team hit above .300 in two matches. Gabriella Karman finished the tournament with a .405 hitting percentage, Kendall Harris added .352, and Anna Myhal chipped in timely kills. Wilson led the way defensively with 10 total blocks. 

Canisius finished last season 14-15 overall and 10-8 in MAAC play, advancing to the conference quarterfinals. 

UAlbany holds a 1-0 advantage in the series, with the lone meeting a 3-1 win in 1999.
