Men’s Basketball Aims to Defend Albany Cup in Friday Night Showdown at MVP Arena

ALBANY, N.Y. – The University at Albany men's basketball team will battle crosstown rivals Siena on Friday, November 21st, at 7:00 PM at MVP Arena for the Albany Cup

Leading the Pack 

  • UAlbany is 2-3 overall and 2-0 in Albany this season; Siena holds a 2-2 record while going 1-1 at MVP Arena.
  • As a team, the Great Danes rank 10th in the nation in three-point percentage defense (23.1%), 29th in fast-break points (20.20), 35th in assists per game (19.2), and 39th in steals per game.
  • Around the Nation, Jaden Kempson ranks 8th with 15 steals and leads the team with 23 assists, while also tying Okeke for the team high of four blocks.
  • Five Great Danes are recording double-digit scoring averages with Amir Lindsey (16.3), Zacharie Matulu (12.0), Ife West-Ingram (12.0), Okechukwu Okeke (10.4), and Nas Muhammad (10.0).

Scouting Siena

The Saints are coming off two losses to St. Bonaventure (46-62) and Colgate (69-72), in which the Red Raiders hit a half-court buzzer beater to win the game on Monday, November 17. Siena’s two wins this season are over Bryant (82-66) and Brown (62-46). 

 

The Saints are currently averaging 69.8 points, 25.0 field goals, 4.0 three-pointers, 15.8 free throws, 36.5 rebounds, 13.0 assists, 11.3 turnovers, 17.8 points off turnovers, 8.3 steals and 2.0 blocks per game.

 

Gavin Doty leads Siena with 69 points, averaging 17.3 points, shooting 26-53 (.491%) from the field, and 3-10 (.300%) from three-point range. Brendan Coyle has recorded the most three’s for Siena at 8-28 (.286%). Tasman Goodrick has grabbed the most rebounds at 37, averaging 9.3 rebounds per game, and leads the team with three blocks. In assists, Justice Shoats leads the Saints with 20 and is tied with Doty at six total steals

The Great Danes are 7-3 overall over the past 10 years vs. Siena, with the Great Danes having won 4-of-5 previous matchups with the Saints. UAlbany’s most recent victory came back on November 16, 2024, when the Great Danes defeated the Saints 70-60 in Broadview Center. In that game, with 21 points and eight rebounds, Justin Neely was the highlight of the Great Danes’ offense. Byron Joshua finished the game with 11 points and seven rebounds. UAlbany out rebounded the 22nd-best rebounding team in the nation 38-27. A total of 10 lead changes occurred throughout the match. The Great Danes outplayed Siena with 40 points in the paint to the Saints’ 22 and 10 steals to seven. For shooting, the Purple and Gold went 24-52 (46.2%) from the field, 3-8 (37.5%) from beyond the arc, and 19-24 (79.2%) from the line. Siena went 21-58 (36.2%) in field goals, 8-24 (33.3%) from the three, and 10-13 (76.9% at the line.
