Baseball Falls in Game Two

Short Story: The UAlbany baseball team fell to Maine, 7-5, in game two despite a strong team performance at the plate.
 
Key Stat Lines
  • UAlbany Pitcher:
  • Jared Toby tallied a season-best four hits, including three doubles, and an RBI.
  • Ryan Ferremi recorded a pair of singles with a team-best two RBIs.
  • Will Binder slugged a home run and scored twice.
 
Head Coach Jon Mueller: "We got a good start out of Matt Mariano. There were opportunities out there but we were not able to cash in.  Playing for a spot in the playoff's tomorrow is something we have worked very hard for, especially over the last four weeks."
 
How it Happened:
  • Matthew Mariano started on the bump for the Great Danes. Luc Lavigueur got the start for the Black Bears.
  • Maine opened the scoring in the first inning with Jake Marquez hitting a single through the right side with runners on the corners, giving the Black Bears an early 1-0 advantage.
  • UAlbany answered back in the top of the third with Will Binder launching a solo shot to right field, tying the contest at 1-1.
  • Responding in the bottom of the third, Nick White hit a single to score a pair of runs, pushing the Black Bears back in front, 3-1.
  • With runners on the corners in the fourth, Ryan Ferremi hit a two-out single to drive in Michael Maggio, reducing the deficit to 3-2.
  • The Great Danes brought Michael DiMartino out of the pen in the sixth inning.
  • With two runners in scoring position in the sixth, Jonathan Gonzalez hit a single up the middle to score one. Maine added another run with a Will Burns sac fly to left field, to make it 5-2.
  • After a rain delay, Cam Fuer came in to pitch for UAlbany in the sixth with one out and a runner on first.
  • The Black Bears brought Gianni Gambardella in to pitch in the seventh.
  • Fighting back in the seventh, Binder started the inning by reaching base via the walk before scoring on a Jared Toby double, cutting Maine's lead to 5-3.
  • With one out and one on in the bottom of the seventh, Luke Boule entered the game for the Great Danes.
  • Dean O'Neill turned on an off-speed pitch for a two-run shot, extending the Black Bears' lead to 7-3.
  • In the eighth inning, Ferremi smoked a single to right field that allowed John Vitucci to come around and score, cutting the difference to 7-4.
  • Luke Filippi started the ninth inning with a hit-by-pitch with Toby following with a double down the left field line. Filippi crossed the plate on a ground ball to make it 7-5.
  • The Black Bears held on to win game two, 7-5.
