Softball Defeats Binghamton, Will Play in Championship Game

LOCATION: UMaine Softball Complex - Orono, Maine
 
SHORT STORY: Taking advantage of baserunners early on, the Great Danes earned a 6-3 win over second-seeded Binghamton to advance from the winner's bracket final for the first time since 2013.

KEY STATS
  • Graduate student Maddi Petrella and sophomore Kasey Conn led the Great Danes with two RBI each.
  • Graduate student Caitlyn Mitros went 3-3 with one run.
  • UAlbany's extra-base hits came from sophomore Deanna Grahek (double) and Conn (triple).
  • Grahek scored a team-high two runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bearcats started the scoring right away with a run in the first inning.
  • After leaving three Great Danes on base in the bottom of the first, UAlbany came back with two runs in the second inning.
  • With the bases loaded, Maddi Petrella hit a two-RBI single to right field.
  • The Great Dane bats came alive in the third inning.
  • Great hitting combined with close calls led to four UAlbany runs and a 6-1 lead after three.
  • With runners on first and second, Deanna Grahek slammed the ball down the left-field line for an RBI double. 
  • Kasey Conn followed with a triple to right field and two RBI.
  • Conn later scored during a delayed double steal for the Great Danes' sixth run.
  • Binghamton closed the scoring gap with one run in the fourth.
  • After two scoreless innings, the Bearcats added a third run in the top of the seventh.
  • Despite having two runners on base, including one in scoring position, and just one out on the board, the Great Danes remained calm and left both Bearcats on to earn the win, 6-3.
 
NEXT: UAlbany will compete in the championship game on Saturday (May 11) at noon. They will play the winner of the final elimination game. Should the Great Danes lose in the 12 pm game, they will have a second chance at the championship title against the same opponent.
