SHORT STORY: In a close contest, the Great Danes tabbed the victory for game one in the weekend series against UMBC, Saturday.

- Redshirt-junior Victoria Vilarchao led with two RBI from one single and one sac fly.
- Freshman Mary Kate Murray hit two singles in three at-bats.
- Graduate student Morgan Petty tallied the lone multi-base hit for the Great Danes with a home run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Morgan Petty started the hitting with a home run in the first inning.
- Mary Kate Murray followed with a single to advance graduate student Maddi Petrella, who earned first base on balls, to third. Hitting a sac fly, Victoria Vilarchao drove in a run with Petrella crossing home base.
- After two Retrievers got on base in the second inning, the Great Dane defense held the 2-0 lead with a double play to head back to the dugout.
- Sophomore Kasey Conn (second) and Wendi Hammond (third) each added a single in the following innings.
- UMBC got on the board with an RBI double and an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning.
- After a scoreless fifth, the Retrievers tied the score with a home run in the top of the sixth.
- With two on base at first and second, Vilarchao hit a well-placed ball to send the runner at second, senior Jordan Nastos, home for what proved to be the game-winning run.
- The Great Dane defense tallied three consecutive outs in the top of the seventh to close the game with a win, 3-2.
NEXT: The Great Danes are set to close out the series against UMBC with a doubleheader on Sunday (Apr. 7) at noon.
