UMBC Sweeps Baseball

Short Story: UMBC completed the sweep over UAlbany baseball on Sunday afternoon as mistakes proved to be costly.

 How it Happened:
  • Owen Birkman got the start in game three for the Great Danes. Logan Wiley started for the Retrievers.
  • Luke Myers started the game with a single through the right side before advancing to third on a Will Binder single up the middle. Levi McAllister drove in Myers with a sac fly to right field, giving UAlbany an early 1-0 advantage.
  • UMBC answered back in the bottom of the first. Loading the bases with two outs, Danny Wyatt roped a double to score a pair, making it 2-1.
  • With two runners on in the top of the second, Justin Hurd hit a line-drive single to the outfield to score Thomas McElwee, tying the contest at 2-2.
  • Matthew Best hit a solo home run in the second inning to regain the lead for UMBC. Matt Ryan hit a two-run shot following a walk, pushing the score to 5-2.
  • Luke Filippi and Binder hit back-to-back doubles to start the top of the third as the Great Danes looked to chip away at the deficit. Ryan Ferremi scored on a wild pitch later that inning, making it 5-4.
  • Connor Eisenmann was called in to pitch in the third inning by the Great Danes.
  • The Retrievers brought in Sam Daniels to pitch in the fourth inning.
  • Loading the bases with two outs, Dawson Baracani scored two on a single. Nico Ong added with an RBI double to center before scoring on a single by Kyle Eddington. Justin Taylor capped off the inning with a double to right field, extending their lead to 12-4.
  • UMBC called in Ben Craig to pitch in the sixth inning.
  • Cooper Loyal started the sixth inning by reaching on a walk. Loyal scored on an error by the third baseman, making it 12-5.
  • UAlbany brought in Steven Turk to pitch in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Sam Downs was brought in to pitch by the Retrievers in the seventh.
  • Luke Myers scored in the top of the eighth on a fielder's choice by Levi McAllister. With bases loaded, Anthony Scarabino worked a full count walk to see another run cross the plate, reducing the deficit to 12-7.
  • Kyle McCaffrey was brought in by the Great Danes in the bottom of the eighth with one out.
  • UMBC called on Eddie Sargeant to pitch in the ninth.  
  • UMBC finished the game on top, winning 12-7.
