Softball Falls on Day One in Rhode Island

LOCATION: Conaty Park - Smithfield, R.I.
 
SHORT STORY: After a close loss in the first game, the Great Danes fell in five innings for game two of a Saturday doubleheader at Bryant.

KEY STATS  
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bulldogs started scoring with two runs in the first inning.
  • In a scoreless second inning, Jordan Nastos hit the first Great Dane single of the day.
  • After graduate student Caitlyn Mitros got on base, Morgan Petty hit the ball over the fence to tie the score at two.
  • Bryant closed the third inning with two additional runs to hold on to its two-run advantage. The Bulldogs then added to their lead with one run in the fifth inning.
  • Three consecutive hits, including a double from Nastos, an RBI single from Victoria Vilarchao, and an RBI single from Wendi Hammond, put the Great Danes down by just one run with no outs in the sixth inning.
  • Deanna Grahek hit a fly ball into center field to sacrifice herself and earn an RBI in order to tie the score at five before the end of the inning.
  • The Bulldogs won in the bottom of the seventh with an unearned run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UAlbany opened the second game with two consecutive hits from Caitlyn Mitros and Morgan Petty.
  • Maddi Petrella slammed the ball over left-center field for a two-run homer in the first inning.
  • The Great Danes held the Bulldogs scoreless through the first inning but Bryant took a two-run lead after two innings of play.
  • The Bulldogs extended their lead to four in the bottom of the third before gaining four additional runs from a grand slam in the fourth inning.
  • Unable to take advantage of a baserunner in the fifth, the Great Danes fell, 10-2, in game two of the doubleheader.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will close out the weekend series with a single game on Sunday (Apr. 14).
