Comeback Falls Short for Men’s Lacrosse

Score: UAlbany 11, UMass 12

Short Story: The University at Albany men's lacrosse team battled back from a four-goal deficit on Saturday afternoon at UMass, but ultimately fell to the Minutemen by a score of 12-11.

Key Stat Lines
  • Three Great Danes tallied multiple goals in Ryan Doherty, Silas Richmond, and Chris Crapanzano. With two assists, Richmond led the team with four total points. Doherty also added an assist, finishing with three points.  
  • Jackson Palumb, Alex Pfeiffer, Daniel Kesselring, Graydon Hogg, and Jake Piseno all registered a goal. Hogg and Piseno each added an assist.
  • Piseno and Pfeiffer each finished with three ground balls, with Piseno adding an additional two caused turnovers.
  • Wil Pepe totaled two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
  • Regan Endres finished with 12 ground balls, going 14-27 on faceoffs.
  • Landon Whitney made 10 saves for the Great Danes in net.
  • UAlbany led in shots, 42-34, but UMass led in shots on goal, 22-18.
  • The Great Danes finished with 36 ground balls to UMass' 30.
 
Head Coach Scott Marr: "This being our longest rivalry in the DI era, it was once again a heavyweight battle of two tough blue-collar teams. Unfortunately, they made one more play today. We battled hard and I'm proud of our effort. We just need to continue to work at playing a cleaner game. I am confident these early one-goal losses will help us to grow into the team we know we can be."

How it Happened:
  • The Great Danes got on the board first when Alex Pfeiffer buried one just two minutes in.
  • The Minutemen responded with three straight goals to take a 3-1 advantage. Zach Auble scored at the 10:57 mark to start it before another back-to-back were scored just after the seven-minute mark, the first by Mike Tobin and the second by Shane O'Leary.
  • UAlbany's Ryan Doherty stopped the bleeding at the 5:08 mark, bringing the Great Danes back within one after scoring his fifth of the season.
  • UMass scored the first two goals of the second half (Mason Bregman and Mike Tobin) before Chris Crapanzano found his way onto the score sheet with his third of the year to cut the deficit back to two at 5-3. Less than a minute later, UMass re-took its three-goal edge with a score from Caelin Lewis.
  • The Great Danes ended the first half by scoring two straight, bringing the score to 6-5 heading into the locker room. Jake Piseno scored his second of the year with the long stick to bring UAlbany's total to four, Graydon Hogg added the final of the first half with 13 seconds left on an assist from Doherty.
  • Both teams finished the first half with 17 shots, nine on goal for the Great Danes and 11 on goal for the Minutemen.
  • UAlbany's Landon Whitney made five saves in the first half while Regan Endres won 7-13 faceoffs for the Purple & Gold.
  • Doherty tied the game at 6-6 four minutes into the second half, notching his second of the afternoon. A minute and a half later, UMass re-took the advantage on Conor Foley's third of the year.
  • Jackson Palumb tied it up at 7-7 with 3:48 on the clock, but the Minutemen rattled off three-straight to take a 10-7 advantage into the fourth quarter.
  • Crapanzano was the first to find the net in the fourth, scoring just over two minutes in. UMass answered with back-to-back goals to increase the lead to four with 10 minutes remaining.
  • A minute later, Silas Richmond scored his first of the afternoon and eighth of the year to bring life back to the UAlbany bench. He tallied his second of the afternoon with 5:57 remaining to bring the Great Danes back within two.
  • The final goal of the game was scored by Daniel Kesselring with 2:39 on the clock, bringing UAlbany to within one.
