Head Coach Katie Thomson: "What a great game today and team win. We are so proud of our players for their preparation this week and execution today. Binghamton always battles hard, and I thought our team did a really good job of staying poised and resilient when Binghamton would create some momentum. We will enjoy this and get back to work as we prepare for Syracuse on Tuesday."
How it Happened
- After a 1-6 start through seven games of their non-conference schedule, the University at Albany women's lacrosse team opened America East play Saturday at home against Binghamton in a rematch of the 2023 championship game. In that game, UAlbany outlasted the Bearcats 14-13 to win their third America East title, and first since 2012.
- UAlbany had played each of its last three games on the road, and in its first seven games of the season, had faced five teams ranked in the top-25, and three ranked in the top-three. Binghamton had followed up its four-game winning streak by dropping each of its last three.
- Ava Poupard put UAlbany on the board quickly, with 12:51 on the clock in the first quarter. She received a pass from Katie Pascale, spun around her defender, and beat goalkeeper Sofia Salgado for the lead. The Bearcats responded soon after, tying the game at one with 11:16 to go.
- Bryar Hogg set up Megan Dineen with 8:50 left in the first quarter to put the Great Danes ahead 2-1. It was the last goal either team would score in the opening frame.
- Pascale scored her first of five goals on the afternoon to start the second quarter and put UAlbany up two. Grace McCauley followed almost four minutes later for a three-goal lead. Freshman Mikaela Mooney assisted on both goals.
- Binghamton regrouped to score each of the next five goals to take a 6-4 lead with 1:25 left before halftime. With 11 seconds remaining in the half, Allie Maloney found Kloey Roos for the score to cut the Great Danes' deficit to one. On the ensuing draw, Pascale won the ball, charged down the middle of the filed, cut, and scored the equalizer with 0.4 seconds on the clock.
- Pascale scored twice in 13 seconds early in the third quarter, completing a personal 3-0 run, to put UAlbany ahead 8-6 with 12:41 on the clock. Pascale's run was part of a larger 5-0 run for the Great Danes, capped by McCauley scoring with 9:04 left in the quarter off a setup from Pascale to put UAlbany up 9-6.
- Binghamton scored twice to close within one, before Maloney, Roos, and Hogg scored three-straight to close the third and open the fourth to give UAlbany a 12-8 lead. The Bearcats rallied to scored three goals in two minutes to once again close within one.
- Mooney scored on a free-position to give the Great Danes a two-goal lead, but Binghamton kept close with another score with 4:59 to go. McCauley and Pascale once again scored back-to-back in the final two minutes to create some breathing room, and despite one final goal from Binghamton with 21 seconds remaining, UAlbany held on to win 15-13.
- Saturday's victory was just the fourth game between UAlbany and Binghamton since 2002 decided by four goals or fewer, and UAlbany remains unbeaten in the Division I era against the Bearcats, now 25-0. Pascale finished with seven total points on five goals and two assists, while adding eight draws and three ground balls. McCauley recorded at least hat trick for the third-straight in which she has appeared, and her fourth of the season.
Next: UAlbany visits #7 Syracuse on March 19.
