Birkman Powers Baseball to Senior Day Win

Short Story: The University at Albany baseball team took down America East foe NJIT, 8-0, to earn a win in the team's final game of the 2023 season. Own Birkman dominated on the mound for UAlbany, tossing 8.1 scoreless innings while allowing only four hits.
 
Head Coach Jon Mueller: "It was a tremendous team win today. Owen Birkman was fabulous, he gave us our best start of the year. Really excited for our seniors moving forward… They did great academically, in the community they were great leaders, and they will go on to better things with their baseball careers over. Super proud of those guys."

  • Will Feil finished with a team-high three hits, also collecting two RBIs and crossing home plate twice.
  • Josh Salandy went 2-4 at the plate with two RBIs.
  • Will Binder, Luke Filippi, and Carson Dunkel all finished with two hits and an RBI.
  • As a team, UAlbany finished with 13 hits, two walks, three strikeouts, and left 12 men on base.
 
How it Happened:
  • Owen Birkman started on the mound for the Great Danes, Joe Georgini started for NJIT.
  • UAlbany jumped on the board in the first inning, taking a 3-0 advantage. Luke Filippi, Will Feil, and Carson Dunkel all picked up RBI doubles.
  • The Great Danes tacked on another run in the fourth, making it 4-0, thanks to an RBI single from Will Binder – scoring Chris Fisher from second.
  • Croix Jenkins took the mound for NJIT to start the fifth.
  • Tyler Cirone took the ball for NJIT to start the bottom of the sixth.
  • UAlbany made it 6-0 in the sixth on an RBI triple from Jason Bottari and and Rbi from Will Feil on an error, knocking NJIT's Cirone out of the game. He was replaced on the mound by Drew Standen with two outs.
  • Joey Craska took the mound for NJIT to start the bottom of the eighth. He was replaced by Alex DiBona with two outs and runners on second and third. The next at-bat, Josh Salandy drove in both runners to push the score to 8-0.
  • Michael DiMartino came into the game for UAlbany with one out and runners on first in second in the ninth inning.
