Binghamton Takes Softball Rubber Match

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes fell in a close rubber game after Binghamton took a one-run lead in the bottom of the sixth, Sunday.

KEY STATS
  • Senior Morgan Petty went 2-2 at the plate to lead the team with one RBI and one run from a home run.
  • Senior Caitlyn Mitros added the second RBI with a sacrifice fly.
  • Freshman Deanna Grahek tied Petty with two hits in her three at bats.
  • Senior Wendi Hammond tied a season-high with five strikeouts.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Morgan Petty tallied the first hit of the game in the top of the first.
  • The Great Dane defense held two runners on base to keep the game scoreless after the first inning.
  • After retiring three-straight batters in the second, UAlbany headed back to the dugout.
  • Putting two runners on base, with a fielding error and a single from Jordan Nastos, the Great Danes tallied the go-ahead run as junior Caroline Srokowski made her way home on a sacrifice fly from Caitlyn Mitros.
  • Binghamton tied the score in the bottom of the fourth inning.
  • Both teams went three up, three down in the fifth inning.
  • Petty led off the sixth with a home run over the right-center fence. 
  • UAlbany added two singles from Sara Anderson and Deanna Grahek but Petty's was the lone Great Dane run of the inning.
  • With the sun blocking the view of the ball, a two-out fly ball dropped to allow the Bearcats to earn a two-run double and take the lead before the sixth inning finished.
  • Caitlyn Frederick opened the final inning with a bunt to get on base and made her way to third base but UAlbany was unable to tie the score and fell, 3-2.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes will return home to host Syracuse for a midweek doubleheader on April 12.
