NJIT Completes Weekend Sweep of Baseball

Short Story: The University at Albany baseball team fell to NJIT in the final game of the weekend series, 7-6, thanks to a ninth inning walk-off home run. The Great Danes battled back from a 6-3 deficit to tie the game late, but were unable to bring the game to extras.
 
Head Coach Jon Mueller: "The guys battled all weekend but came up short. We will get back to work on Tuesday and prepare for Maine next weekend."

  • UAlbany Pitchers:
  • Will Binder led the offense with three hits and two RBIs off a two-run home run.
  • Will Feil (2-3), Jason Bottari (2-3), and Carson Dunkel (2-4) all finished with two hits. Feil added a walk, Bottari and Dunkel each had an RBI.
  • Owen Silliman went 1-4 with an RBI.
  • Josh Salandy did not record a hit but ended with an RBI.
  • Chris Fisher went 1-4 with a walk.
  • UAlbany finished with 11 hits, two walks, four strikeouts, and left seven men on base.
 
How it Happened:
  • Connor Eisenmann started on the mound for the Great Danes, Joe Georgini started for the Highlanders.
  • UAlbany got on the board in the second inning on a fielder's choice. Josh Salandy grounded out to third base but brought Jason Bottari home on the play to make it 1-0. 
  • NJIT took a 2-1 lead in the third inning. Andrew Elcock hit an RBI triple and was later brought home on a Ty Sallie double to put the Highlanders ahead.
  • Will Binder sent a two-run shot over the left center fence to put the Great Danes ahead, 3-2, in the sixth. Will Feil scored on the long ball after reaching earlier in the inning on a ground-rule double.
  • Following the home run, NJIT replaced Georgini on the mound with Liam Reiner.
  • NJIT tied the game at three in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single from Jared Donnelly. After tying the game, NJIT was able to force Eisenmann out of the game. With the bases loaded. He was replaced by Dylan Banner.
  • After loading the bases and forcing UAlbany to make a pitching change, NJIT shot out to a 6-3 advantage. Sallie doubled to bring in two runs before Longo brought in the final on a line-out to left field. 
  • The Great Danes responded the very next inning with three runs to tie the game at six. After a double from Chris Fisher and a walk to Feil, NJIT replaced Reiner on the mound with Drew Standen. Binder singled through the left side to load the bases before Owen Silliman brought home a run on a fielder's choice. Jason Bottari then singled to bring home Feil and Carson Dunkel singled to tie the game at six, scoring Silliman.
  • Holden de Jong entered the game for NJIT to record the final two outs of the eighth.
  • NJIT collected it's second walk-off win of the series when Donnelly sent one over the right field fence to end the game in the bottom of the ninth.
