Men's Lacrosse Falls Against UMass 9-6

Score: UMass 9, UAlbany 6

Location: Tom & Mary Casey Stadium in Albany, N.Y.

Records: UAlbany (1-3) | UMass (3-2)

Short Story: Silas Richmond records a hat trick but men's lacrosse falls against UMass 9-6.

Key Stats Head Coach Scott Marr: "We're very, very pleased with our defensive effort today.  It's just a shame we couldn't have duplicated last weekend's performance offensively.  So, we'll get back to the drawing board on offense tomorrow.  We had good effort, and defensively, we played really, really well, so we're excited about that, and we just have to put both ends together.  I don't want to sell our defense short at all, they played awesome today, and Jack played very well in goal."

How it Happened
  • The University at Albany men's lacrosse program hosted its third-straight game on Tuesday, welcoming its longest-running non-conference rival, UMass, to Tom & Mary Casey Stadium.  UAlbany had just recorded its first win over the season, 11-7 over it second-longest non-conference rival Drexel, while the Minutemen had dropped their previous two to Boston University and then-#11 Yale.
  • UMass opened the game on a 3-0 run, before UAlbany's first goal with 11 seconds left in the first quarter.  Declan Palandjian fired a shot off of UMass goalkeeper Matt Knote.  TJ Sheehan collected the rebound and scored with Knote out of position to put UAlbany on the board.
  • Sheehan scored right away in the second quarter, with 14:21 on the clock, to bring UAlbany within one.  UMass scored just over two minutes later to take a 4-2 lead.
  • Silas Richmond scored his first of three goals on the afternoon with 5:25 left in the second, before UMass closed the first half and opened the second on a 2-0 run to take a 6-3 lead.  Richmond scored again with 8:13 to go to keep pace, but UMass added two more scores in the next six minutes and led 8-4 heading into the final quarter.
  • Peter Salit scored his second goal of the season with 8:17 left, but UMass notched one more with 5:06 to go to lead by four.  Richmond completed his hat trick with 1:14 left in the game to bring the final score to 9-6 in favor of the Minutemen.
  • Both Richmond and Sheehan finished with three total points, while UAlbany as a team traded a narrow advantage in shots, 38-34, with a slight deficit in faceoffs, 10-9.  UAlbany's defense forced 12 turnovers, including four from Elijah Gash, while UAlbany goalkeeper Jack VanValkenburgh, making his second-straight start, finished with 10 saves in net.
Next: UAlbany hosts #4 Maryland on March 11.
