Score: UConn 20, UAlbany 12

Location: Morrone Stadium in Storrs, Conn.

Records: UAlbany (4-5) | UConn (5-3)

Short Story: Allie Maloney leads with four goals in the second half but women's lacrosse closes its three-game road swing with a 20-12 defeat at UConn.

Key Stats Head Coach Katie Thomson: "Today was a tough game.  UConn took advantage of their opportunities and went on too many long runs.  We need to capitalize on our own opportunities of momentum and finish the play in those moments.  We'll reflect and move forward to our first conference game on Saturday."

How it Happened
  • The University at Albany women's lacrosse program closed out a season-long three-game road swing on Wednesday at regional rival UConn, after playing two games in California against Stanford and UC Davis, going 1-1 on the trip.  Wednesday's game was the last before the start of America East play this weekend.  UAlbany's offense had found its rhythm, scoring a combined 56 goals in its last three games.
  • The offense showed up early for UAlbany against the Huskies, when Sarah Falk scored twice in the first five minutes, just 62 seconds apart, to give UAlbany an early 2-0 lead.  UConn, unranked but receiving votes in the latest media poll, regrouped to score each of the next five to take a three-goal lead with 3:55 left in the first quarter.
  • Katie Pascale scored her only goal of the afternoon to interrupt UConn's long run, ending a seven-minute scoring drought for UAlbany.  UConn scored each of the next three to lead 8-3 with 11:57 left in the second.
  • Shonly Wallace scored her first goal of the game with 10:09 left in the second, followed by a ninth goal from UConn.  Wallace scored again four minutes later, just before Ava Poupard converted a setup from Pascale to close UAlbany within three with just over two minutes remaining before halftime.
  • Late in the first half, UConn had out-drawn the Great Danes 10-4.  After that point, the Great Danes won 15 of 22 draws, including eight of 10 in the fourth quarter.
  • UConn scored twice in the final minute of the first half to take a five-goal lead into the break.  After halftime, UAlbany's offense came out firing again, scoring three-straight over the first seven-and-a-half minutes of the period.  UConn ended UAlbany's run, after the Great Danes had closed within two, 11-9, by scoring three-straight of their own.
  • Allie Maloney, who scored her first goal of the game during the Great Danes' previous three-goal run, scored three-straight for UAlbany to start the fourth, with 14:02, 12:09, and 11:24 on the clock, bringing her total to a team-high four goals.  After Maloney's fourth and final goal, however, UConn's defense locked the Great Danes down for the remainder of the game, and their offense scored each of the game's final five goals to claim a 20-12 victory.
  • UConn outshot UAlbany 46-29 overall, including 16-4 in the first quarter, but UAlbany regrouped to only face a five-shot deficit after the opening 15 minutes.  The Huskies enjoyed a similar advantage in ground balls, 19-11.  Both goalkeepers, Aislinn Sweeney and UConn's Landyn White, recorded 13 saves, but Sweeney faced seven free-position shots while the Great Danes did not manage one.
Next: UAlbany kicks off its 2023 America East schedule at home with a rematch of last season's conference title game against Vermont on March 25.
