Baseball Drops Final Game of Series

Short Story: The University at Albany baseball team fell in the final game of the weekend series to Hofstra, 14-8. Despite a six-run third inning from the Great Danes, the Hofstra offense exploded for 14 runs and the series sweep.

How it Happened:
  • Connor Eisenmann started on the mound for UAlbany, Brad Camarda started for Hofstra.
  • The Pride struck first in the bottom half of the opening inning. Brian Morrell hit a sac fly to center to score Ryan Morash for the first run of the day. The Pride continued the first inning run by loading the bases with two outs and drawing a walk to let Will Kennedy score.
  • Hofstra tacked on another run in the next inning following an infield hit from Kennedy, scoring Dylan Palmer from third.
  • The Great Danes exploded in the third inning, scoring six runs. Will Feil started the party with a solo shot to right center, the first long ball of the year for the team. Chris Fisher then scored Will Binder and Carson Dunkel on a two-RBI single to left. New Great Dane Danny Alvarez next hit a triple to right to score Fisher before Victor Mazzara drove him in on a deep sac fly to center. The final run of the inning came from a solo home run off the bat of Owen Silliman, the first of his collegiate career.
  • Frankie Martinez replaced Camarda on the mound for Hofstra with one out in the third.
  • Joseph Tobia took the mound for UAlbany with two outs and two runners on in the bottom of the third.
  • Hofstra capitalized on the pitching change, with Morash singling to left to score Matt Pelcher to cut the lead to two. The lead was cut once more to one run on a double steal with runners on the corners. Pelcher scored by stealing home on the throw down to second.
  • Will Binder notched his first home run of the year in the fourth, a deep solo shot to left to push the score to 7-5.
  • The Pride tied the game at seven in the fourth. Brian Morrell scored on a fielder's choice and Kevin Bruggeman scored on an RBI double from Steve Harrington.
  • Matthew Mariano, making his collegiate debut, replaced Tobia on the mound for UAlbany with one out in the fourth.
  • Following the pitching change, Hofstra took an 8-7 lead on a double from Santino Rosso. The lead was pushed to 9-7 following a throwing error to third base from UAlbany with Rosso scoring.
  • A Devan Kruzinski sac fly brought the Great Danes back within a run, 9-8, in the top of the fifth.
  • Kyle McCaffrey took the mound for UAlbany to start the bottom of the fifth.
  • With no lack of offense this game, Hofstra responded in the fifth when Bruggeman hit a double to left, scoring Kennedy. Bruggeman scored moments later following a sac fly from Rosso to make it 11-8.  
  • Rob Manetta was handed the ball for UAlbany with one out in the bottom of the seventh.
  • Hofstra collected an RBI groundout in the bottom of the seventh off the bat of Harrington, making it 12-8.
  • Steven Turk was given the ball for UAlbany with two outs in the bottom of the eighth.
  • Hofstra added two more runs to push the score to 14-8, knocking Turk out of the game.
  • Cam Fuer replaced Turk with two outs in the eighth.
