Explosive Offense Leads to Doubleheader Sweep over Binghamton

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes opened the day with strong offensive pressure to secure the doubleheader sweep against Binghamton, Wednesday.
 
GAME ONE

  • Junior Morgan Petty tallied the sole UAlbany home run of the day.
  • Graduate student Katie Falotico led the team going 3-3 from the plate. 
  • Falotico and Petty tied with a team-high two RBI while Petty and senior Alexis Phillips led with two runs each.
  • Junior Wendi Hammond pitched the complete-game victory.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wendi Hammond opened the game with a strikeout before working with the defense to send the Great Danes to the dugout for the first time.
  • With Alexis Phillips on base, Morgan Petty knocked her ball over the right-field fence for a two-run homer.
  • As Hammond tallied a strikeout each in the second and third, the score remained with a 2-0 UAlbany advantage.
  • The Bearcats tied the score at two with a run in the fourth inning and a run in the fifth inning.
  • After a fourth strikeout from Hammond, the Great Danes put two on base - a walk for Phillips and a single from Petty - in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Two singles in a row, from Katie Falotico and senior Maranda Jimenez, drove in three runs for UAlbany.
  • The Great Danes held two runners on base in the top of the seventh to close the first game with a 5-2 win.

  • Senior Lové Drumgole went 2-2 at the plate, totaling two RBI and two runs.
  • Five Great Danes went 2-3 at the plate - Petty, Jimenez, Petrella, freshman Sierra Fretz, and junior Emma Adams.
  • Jimenez and Adams each hit a double.
  • The UAlbany pitchers compiled seven strikeouts in the five-inning victory. Redshirt-senior Briana Garrett led with five in four innings and freshman Amelia Freitas totaled two in one inning.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Briana Garrett tallied the first out for the Great Danes with a strikeout swinging.
  • UAlbany's scoring began in the bottom of the first as Morgan Petty hit a single up the middle to drive in leadoff batter, Alexis Phillips.
  • Maddi Petrella's single added two RBI as Maranda Jimenez and Katie Falotico each crossed home.
  • The two following batters - graduate student Chloe Lewis and Sierra Fretz - loaded the bases before Lové Drumgole and Phillips added an RBI each.
  • With a 5-0 lead and loaded bases, Petty notched a single, leading to two runs to give the Great Danes a 7-0 lead in the first inning.
  • The second inning saw two strikeouts from Garrett and Falotico's second triple of the day.
  • The Bearcats closed the lead with two runs in the top of the third.
  • Four Great Danes tallied a hit in the bottom of the third as Drumgole scored to extend the UAlbany lead, 8-2.
  • Garrett closed the top of the fourth inning with her fifth strikeout.
  • Jimenez opened the bottom of the fourth, hitting a double on the first pitch.
  • Petrella knocked a second hit to left field to drive in freshman McKenzie Swinson, pinch-running for Jimenez.
  • Three more runs, including two RBI from Emma Adams and Drumgole, gave the Great Danes a 12-2 advantage heading into the fifth inning.
  • Amelia Freitas took over the circle for Garrett. She tallied two strikeouts, the first and the third of the inning, to secure the 10-run victory for UAlbany.
 
NEXT: The Great Danes head to Hartford for a weekend series set to kick off with a single game on Friday (April 15).
