Petty Leads as Softball Splits Marist Doubleheader

SHORT STORY: The Great Danes opened the day with an extra-inning win before falling by one run in the second game of the doubleheader against Marist.
 
GAME ONE

KEY STATS
  • Junior Morgan Petty and senior Maranda Jimenez each notched a home run.
  • Graduate student Katie Falotico and junior Maddi Petrella both hit a double.
  • Petty led the team with three RBI; Falotico and Jimenez followed with one each.
  • Petrella went 3-3 from the plate and Jimenez followed, 2-3.
  • Junior pitcher Wendi Hammond pitched a complete-game win, tallying seven strikeouts and allowing four earned runs.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wendi Hammond tallied her first strikeout of the day in the first inning.
  • Neither team scored in the first inning with the Red Foxes gaining a 4-0 lead after the top of the second as one batter hit a triple drive in three runs after a single tallied one RBI.
  • Maranda Jimenez hit the first homer of the day, closing Marist's lead to three runs at the end of the second.
  • Tallying three-straight outs in the top of the third, including a strikeout from Hammond, the Great Danes left one on base in their turn at-bat.
  • Hammond added two strikeouts in the fifth inning.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, after senior Alexis Phillips and junior Caitlyn Mitros got on base, Morgan Petty knocked the ball far out of the park to tie the score, 4-4.
  • Hammond grabbed two strikeouts in the sixth and seventh innings - one in each - and the game remained tied as the Great Danes and the Red Foxes entered extra innings.
  • After leaving one Marist runner on base, UAlbany entered the dugout for what proved to be the last time of the game. 
  • Katie Falotico began the inning with a double, driving in the game-winning run.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Red Foxes opened the second game with a single but a double-play from the Great Danes closed the inning in just three at-bats.
  • Marist took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Jimenez tallied a single but UAlbany was unable to capitalize on the runner.
  • The Great Danes notched three-straight outs in the third inning as the score remained with a Marist lead, 1-0, through the top of the fourth inning.
  • Freshman Caitlyn Frederick opened the bottom of the fourth by getting on base with a walk.
  • Morgan Petty tallied a double to drive in Frederick and tie the score, 1-1.
  • With Petty sitting on third, Jimenez knocked the ball deep to center field, tallying a sacrifice fly, to give the Great Danes the lead, 2-1, headed into the fifth inning.
  • The Red Foxes gained a 5-2 advantage in the fifth.
  • Holding back Marist, UAlbany's defense tallied three-straight outs in the sixth inning.
  • Frederick opened the sixth with a single to get on base before Petty added a double and an RBI. 
  • After Petty scored, Maddi Petrella hit a homer over the right-field fence.
  • All in all, the Great Danes totaled three runs in the sixth to tie the score heading into the final inning.
  • The Red Foxes earned the win, 6-5, with a final run in the seventh inning.
 
NEXT: UAlbany will open conference play on Saturday, April 2, with a doubleheader at UMBC.
