Great Danes Complete Sweep of Stony Brook with Win on Senior Day

Short Story: The University at Albany softball team wrapped up its regular season home schedule this afternoon with a 3-1 win over archrival Stony Brook, completing a three-game weekend sweep over the first-place Seawolves. The Great Danes celebrated Senior Day, holding a pregame ceremony for the class of 2020 after not being able to hold one the year prior. Kelly Barkevich and Amanda Mosall were honored in the celebration, surrounded by the team, friends, and family.
 
Three runs was all it took for UAlbany thanks to a one-two punch pitching performance from Wendi Hammond and Briana Garrett, who combined to only allow one earned run. Tara Driver collected what would be the game-winning hit in the fourth inning, launching a two-run homerun off of the Albany Field scoreboard in right-center to jolt the Great Danes ahead of their rival. With the win, UAlbany completed the three-game sweep of Stony Brook and notched the team's sixth-consecutive America East victory ahead of the final weekend of the regular season.

Key Stats:
  • Hammond Started in the circle for UAlbany, going five innings and allowing Stony Brook's lone run of the ballgame. She allowed nine hits and struck out two. Garrett replaced Hammond in the fifth, tossing the remaining two innings without giving up a single hit.
  • Tara Driver, starting as the designated player before moving behind the plate, finished going 2-for-2 at the plate with her two-run homerun and a single.
  • Caitlyn Mitros and Morgan Petty were the only other Great Danes to record hits on the afternoon, with Mitros collecting a bunt single and Petty reaching on a double.  
  • Katie Falotico snagged an RBI after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game at 1-1.

How it Happened:
  • Stony Brook scored the first run of the game in the second, with Craig crossing the plate on a fielder's choice. Sanzone collected the RBI.  
  • The Great Danes tied the game at 1-1 in the third. Falotico was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in Phillips, pinch running, from third.
  • Driver produced what would be the game-winning hit in the fourth, sending a long ball out to the scoreboard of Albany Field to drive in Mitros. The two-run advantage would be all the Great Danes needed to secure the victory.  
  • Barkevich, being honored on senior day, ended the game at the hot corner by snagging a hard hit liner to clinch the win for UAlbany.
Next: Today's matchup wrapped up the team's 2021 home slate, with just one weekend of regular season play remaining. The Great Danes are set to close the season out by traveling north to battle Maine for a three-game series. The 2021 America East Tournament is scheduled to begin the week after, from May 13-15. With only the top four teams making this year's postseason, multiple teams, including UAlbany, will be jostling for playoff positions to close out the season.
