First Inning Woes Too Much to Overcome in Day One Loss to Stony Brook

Score: Stony Brook 10, UAlbany 5

Location: The Diamond at UMBC in Baltimore, Md.

Records: UAlbany (22-18, 12-6 America East) | Stony Brook (26-14, 10-6 America East)

Short Story: The University at Albany softball team fell 10-5 to Stony Brook on day one of the America East Softball Championship. First inning woes, eight runs scored by the Seawolves, were too much for the team to come back from - despite outscoring Stony Brook 5-2 the remainder of the game. The Great Danes stay alive in the double-elimination tournament, moving on to play UMass Lowell tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

Key Stats:
  • Madison Petrella led the Great Danes' offense. She finished going 2-for-2 with a double and a homerun. She drove in two RBIs and accounted for three runs.
  • Kelly Barkevich, Maranda Jimenez, and Tara Driver all collected one RBI each. Barkevich joined Petrella as the only Great Dane with multiple hits, recording a double and a single, and also scored a run.
  • Wendi Hammond started the game in the circle, recording one out before being replaced by Briana Garrett. Garrett went 3.2 innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits. Jimenez finished off the game for UAlbany, tossing the remaining three innings without giving up a run. She allowed just three hits and struck out three batters.
  • After the first inning, UAlbany limited Stony Brook to just two runs on six hits.
How it Happened:
  • Stony Brook piled on in the first inning, scoring eight runs on eight hits. On the first pitch of the game, Hering sent a single up the middle to reach base safely and was driven in off of a Rahrich homerun to left field to put the Seawolves up 2-0. Later in the inning, back-to-back doubles from McCarvill and Nowakowski increased the lead to 3-0. Singles from Craig and Sanzone opened the lead to 5-0 before UAlbany's Hammond was pulled from the game, recording just one out.
  • After Garrett came in for relief in the first inning for UAlbany, Stony Brook tacked on three more runs. Hering singled to score Sazone and Craig, and McFarland hit a sac fly to score Nuss.
  • The Great Danes notched two runs in the second inning to get on the board. Jimenez singled in Petrella for the first run, and Driver hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Barkevich for run number two.
  • Two more runs crossed the plate for UAlbany in the third to cut Stony Brook's initial 8-0 lead in half. Alexis Phillips scored all the way from first on a Petrella double down the right field line that reached the outfield fence to make the score 8-3. Petrella would then score herself off of a double from Barkevich to officially cut the deficit in half.
  • Stony Brook was able to bounce back in the fourth, adding two runs to increase the lead back to six. Nowakowski hit a sacrifice fly to score McFarland before Rahrich scored run number 10 on a UAlbany fielding error, hit by Dye.
  • Petrella nabbed her second RBI of the afternoon in the sixth, drilling a longball to deep left-center for a solo homerun. The score would be the final of the ballgame, with Stony Brook winning 10-5.
Next: UAlbany will now face UMass Lowell tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. If the Great Danes win, they will face the loser of the 11:00 a.m. matchup between UMBC and Stony Brook. If the team loses, the 2021 season will come to an end. The Great Danes need to win four straight games to claim the 2021 America East title. All remaining games will continue to be streamed by the America East.
