AUSTIN, Texas – University at Albany senior Venique Harris placed sixth in the women's discus Saturday night at NCAA Outdoor Championships, marking the end of the 2018-19 collegiate season.
Harris was the sixth-ranked competitor entering the meet, having thrown a collegiate best mark of 190-01.00 to place third at NCAA East Preliminary Championships. Her personal best of 193-05.00 set before she arrived at UAlbany would have placed fourth in last year's outdoor championship meet.
After fouling her first throw, Harris recorded a legal mark of 173-09.00 on her second attempt. She threw herself into the finals with a 186-07.00 mark on her third and potentially final attempt, her second-best throw of the season. It was the fifth-best throw in the field through the first three attempts.
In the finals, Harris recorded marks of 175-08.00, 178-09.00, and 174-05.00, and ultimately fell by one spot to finish sixth overall. Iowa's Laulauga Tausaga won the event with a throw of 207-06.00. Top overall seed Shadae Lawrence from Colorado State placed third in 197-11.00.
With Harris' event now concluded, the 2018-19 collegiate season has come to a close.
