EUGENE, OR. Over the weekend, two Great Danes traveled to the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championship where they competed against the top athletes in the country. Both Grace Claxton and Matthew Campbell represented UAlbany in the 400 hurdles and high jump, respectively. The men finished 72nd out of over entered 300 schools with two points.

Grace Claxton, who has already qualified for the 2016 Rio Olympics, competed in the women's 400 hurdles (semifinals) on Thursday. She ran a time of 56.83 to finish third in her heat and ninth overall.  She entered the meet with the 11th best time overall out of the 24 qualifiers.  Her ninth place finish is the best performance by a UAlbany Female Track & Field student-athlete and also earned her Second Team All-American.

Matthew Campbell competed in the men's high jump on Friday evening. He earned seventh overall with a personal best mark of 7-2¼. Other athletes finishing from third to sixth in the high jump also earned the same 7-2¼ mark. Campbell's mark earned him First Team-All American.

After this weekend, Grace Claxton will represent her home country, Puerto Rico, at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Matthew Campbell will high jump at the upcoming Jamaica Trials looking for an Olympic standard. Alexander Bowen continues competition with the Panama National Team on June 18 in Brazil also in search of an Olympic qualifying mark. Freshman Cara Sherman and Anika Hibbard are competing in the USA Junior Nationals in California. Myles Banfield will compete for Canada at Junior Worlds in Poland, while fellow Canadian Matthew LeLiever also tries to earn his spot at the same meet. Stephanie Osuji will compete for Nigeria over the summer as well and Paige Vadnais will compete in a decathlon this week in Vermont.
