Campbell Advances To NCAA Championships

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The NCAA East Preliminary Championships wrapped up on Saturday, bringing to a close three days of competition.  The University at Albany had nine student-athletes competing over the course of the meet, three of whom had waited until Saturday for their events to begin.

The only event in which the Great Danes competed on Saturday was the men's high jump.  Senior Alexander Bowen and juniors Matthew Campbell and Kingsley Ogbonna made up a contingent of high jumpers that had each cleared a height of at least 7'-1” during the 2016 outdoor season, and all three were in action on Saturday.

Campbell finished the highest among the trio, and was also the only one of the three to advance to NCAA Championships in Oregon.  Campbell placed fourth overall, clearing a height of 7'-1.5”, which is a new personal best for him.

Ogbonna and Bowen placed 13th and 14th respectively, just outside the top 12 requirement to advance to NCAA Championships.  They each cleared 6'-11.75”.

The top 20 finishers in the event each ended with one of two final clearances.  The top seven each finished with a final height of 7'-1.5”, and the next 13 each cleared 6'-11.75”.

Campbell joins Grace Claxton, who qualified for NCAA Championships in the women's 400m hurdles on Friday.  Championships begin on June 8 in Eugene, Oregon.  The semifinals of the women's 400m hurdles is scheduled for Thursday, June 9 at 6:30 p.m. PT, and the men's high jump is scheduled for Friday, June 10 at 5:00 p.m. PT.
