Women's Outdoor Competes In Puerto Rico

CAROLINA, PUERTO RICO – Although they enjoyed a slightly longer break than the men, who sent one athlete to Division I Nationals, the outdoor season descended upon the University at Albany women's team as well.  Only two weeks ago, the women competed at ECAC Championships to wrap up the indoor season.  Saturday, they competed in their first outdoor meet, the Spring Break Classic in Puerto Rico.

On the track, the UAlbany 4x100 team of Ashlee Maduro, Jillian Haynes, Aiyanna James, and Kahlia Taylor claimed a narrow victory over St. John's University, running 47.11 to 47.20.  Kathryn Fanning placed second in the 1,500 in 4:40.75, running in a race with only five other competitors.  CiCi Simon placed third in the 100 hurdles in 15.30.  In the 400, Kamilah Williams placed fourth in 57.18.  Haynes placed ninth in 58.15.

Taylor placed sixth in the 100 in 12.42.  Fanning returned from her second place effort in the 1,500 to claim a narrow victory in the 800.  Fanning edged Federacion's Michelle Lopez by three hundredths of a second, running 2:13.10 to 2:13.13.  Dominique Claudio placed third with a time of 2:15.75, and Brianne Bellon placed fifth in 2:19.35.  Breanna Cummings placed seventh in 2:22.32.

Tynelle Taylor-Chase won the 400 hurdles in 1:00.65.  Aderinsola Ajala was fifth in 1:03.28.  Silvia Del Fava, continuing her winning ways from indoor, led a UAlbany sweep of the top two spots in the 3,000.  Del Fava ran 9:58.45, and Valentina Talevi ran 10:17.24.  UAlbany also swept the top two places in the 4x400 relay.  The 'A' team of Ajala, Claudio, Haynes, and Taylor-Chase ran 3:49.87.

In the field events, Lauren Lopano placed 10th in the hammer, with a mark of 145'-9”.  Samantha Kosa and Janice Johnson placed fourth and sixth respectively in the shot put.  Kosa tied for fourth with a mark of 42'-8.75”, and Johnson's sixth place finish was earned with a throw of 40'-2.75”.  The discus saw Veleisha Walker place sixth with a throw of 128'-3”.  Lopano followed immediately in seventh with a mark of 124'-3”.  And Kosa was ninth with a throw of 119'-8”.  Finally, in the javelin, Walker placed fifth with a throw of 137'-5” setting a new school record.  And in the long jump, James placed fourth in 18'-7.25”. 

UAlbany will return home briefly before traveling again to their next meet.  Late next week, the team will compete at the Texas Relays at the University of Texas, and the Bobcat Invitational at Texas State University.
