Baltimore, Md. - Joe Resetarits extended his point-scoring streak to 43 straight games, but UAlbany fell to #3 Johns Hopkins, 17-6, in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Thursday evening at Homewood Field. The Great Danes fall to 1-8 on the season, while the Blue Jays improve to 9-1.
Johns Hopkins scored the first three goals of the game, starting in the first minute on an unassisted shot by John Ranagan, who led all scorers with four goals. Brandon Benn and John Greeley added tallies for the Blue Jays before UAlbany could find the back of the net. Lyle Thompson ended the scoring drought for the Great Danes with 1:38 left to play in the first, netting an unassisted shot to cut the deficit to 3-1.
After an evenly-played first quarter, Hopkins took control in the second, out-shooting the Great Danes, 13-4, and winning four-of-five faceoffs. The Blue Jays scored again in the first minute of the period, getting a second goal from Ranagan, before Mark Goodrich netted a man-up goal at 12:30. Johns Hopkins scored twice more in the first half, getting goals from Zach Palmer and Chris Boland to hold a 7-1 advantage at halftime.
The Blue Jays did not let up after the break, scoring the first three goals of the third quarter, starting off once again in the first minute of action. Ty Thompson ended the almost 25-minute scoring drought for the Great Danes at 7:07, taking an assist from Travis Lyons. Hopkins responded 19 seconds later, but Miles Thompson completed the Thompson trifecta, netting UAlbany's third goal of the game at 6:21. Miles also had a part in the Great Danes' next two goals, scoring again at 4:43 before assisting Resetarits' tally at 2:31, closing the gap to 11-5. However, Ranagan completed his hat trick for the Blue Jays with a goal at 1:43 to give Hopkins a 12-5 lead heading into the final period.
The Blue Jays continued to fire away in the fourth, scoring five straight goals throughout the final quarter. Freshman Matthew Bertrams closed out the scoring in the game, tallying his second goal of the season for the Great Danes to set the final margin.
Johns Hopkins out-shot the Great Danes, 42-27, and held a 42-30 advantage in ground balls. The Blue Jays also won 18-of-27 faceoffs and converted 2-of-3 extra-man opportunities, while UAlbany was unable to score on two man-up possessions.
"They were ready to play," said UAlbany head coach Scott Marr, who was college teammates with Blue Jay head coach Dave Pietramala at Hopkins. "They don't sell anyone short. Dave always has his team prepared to play us. We played hard, it was our lack of poise in the clearing game that hurt us. But we fought hard, and that was key."
Freshman goalkeeper Max Huber finished with 13 saves in just his third start in the net. Senior John Carroll came in for the final 8:41, and made one save between the pipes. Pierce Bassett earned the win in the net for Johns Hopkins, playing 55:03, and making 11 saves.
"For a freshman, in just his third game, to play as well as he did and make some of those big-time saves is very encouraging for us and our future," said Marr, referencing Huber and his stellar play in the net. "We have a very young team - we have freshmen and sophomores all over the field."
UAlbany will return to action on Saturday, looking to stay undefeated in America East Conference action, visiting Hartford for a 2 p.m. game.
