Amherst, Mass. - Art Kell and
Kyle Smith each scored three goals and recorded two assists to lead #5
Massachusetts to a 17-7 win over UAlbany in non-conference men's lacrosse
action at Garber Field on Tuesday afternoon. UAlbany falls to 0-4 on the
season, while UMass improves to 5-0.
The
Minutemen scored the first five goals of the game, with Kell scoring on an
extra-man opportunity, and on a man-down play. The Great Danes ended their
scoring drought with 4:27 left to play in the first quarter, as Joe Resetarits
took an assist from Lyle Thompson to score his 10th goal of the
season. UMass started the second quarter much like the first, scoring four
straight goals to take a 9-1 lead. This time, it was Thompson who ended the
scoreless stretch for UAlbany, tallying an unassisted shot with just under two
minutes to play. However, Sean Cleary netted his first goal of the season with
1:02 left to play before the half, setting the score at 10-2 at the break.
The
Great Danes regrouped at halftime, and came out firing, as Miles Thompson took
an assist from Lyle to score the first goal of the second half with 11:39 on
the clock. Will Manny scored two goals for the Minutemen, sandwiching a second
goal from Resetarits, putting UMass ahead, 12-4, with 4:47 to play in the
third. The Minutemen would add two more goals in the quarter, putting a 10-goal
differential between themselves and the Great Danes after three quarters.
Resetarits
completed his fourth hat trick of the season with a goal 29 seconds into the fourth
quarter, with an assist from Ty Thompson on an extra-man opportunity. Bobby
Tyler took an assist from goalkeeper Tim McCormack with just under 12 minutes
to go, before Miles Thompson netted a goal for the Great Danes to cut the
deficit back to single digits. The Minutemen would add two more goals to their
final total, while Matthew Bertrams scored the last goal of the game for
UAlbany with 1:38 left to play to set the final score.
UMass
dominated the stats sheet, out-shooting the Great Danes, 52-26, while also
holding a 36-13 advantage in groundballs. The Minutemen also won 21-of-25 face
offs in the game, led by Anthony Toresco, who was 11-for-11. McCormack played
55:23 for UMass, making 11 saves, while Reed Goodhue closed out the game,
stopping one shot. The teams substituted goalkeepers at the same time, as John
Carroll also started and played the majority of the game for UAlbany, making 11
saves between the pipes, while freshman Max Huber made his first appearance for
the Great Danes.
UAlbany
will return to action on Saturday, hosting Canisius at 1 p.m. at John Fallon
Field.
