Albany, N.Y. - Despite a fifth
straight hat trick by senior Joe Resetarits, UAlbany fell to Canisius, 13-10,
in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at John Fallon
Field. With the loss, UAlbany drops to 0-5 on the season, while Canisius evens
its record to 1-1.
UAlbany
scored the first goal of the game, as Lyle Thompson took an assist from brother
Miles just two minutes into action. Canisius responded with the next two goals,
but UAlbany's Will Stenberg evened the score at 2-2 with 1:52 left to play in
the first quarter off an assist by Resetarits. The Great Danes took a 4-2
advantage to start the second quarter on goals a minute and a half apart by
Resetarits and Daley Baker. The Golden Griffins came back, however, netting the
next two scores to tie the game at 4-4. The Thompson brothers connected again
before the half, as Miles assisted on Lyle's second goal of the game, this time
on a man-up opportunity, with 2:23 left to play.
Coming
out of halftime, Canisus scored three straight goals to pull ahead, 7-5 with
8:26 left to play. Resetartis scored his second goal of the game at 6:48 to end
the Golden Griffin run, but back-to-back goals involving Simon Giourmetakis
kept Canisius up by two. Giourmetakis scored at 5:47, before assisting on Cody
Gould's tally at 4:59. The Great Danes attempted to rally before the end of the
half, pulling within 9-8 on goals by Ty Thompson and Rocky Bonitatibus.
However, Canisus won the ensuing faceoff off Bonitatibus' goal and Jimmy Haney
scored for the Golden Griffins before the end of the quarter.
Canisius
continued to fire away in the fourth, scoring three straight goals to start the
final period. Giourmetakis scored two of the three, to bring his total to six
in the game, while Haney completed a hat trick with an unassisted shot. UAlbany
continued to battle, and scored the final two goals of the game. Resetarits
netted an unassisted tally to finalize his fifth consecutive hat trick, while
Bonitatibus took an assist from Ty Thompson for the Great Danes' final goal of
the game at 1:56.
The
teams played the game evenly throughout, with Canisius holding a slight 34-31
advantage in shots and a 35-29 differential in ground balls. The Golden Griffins
won 16-of-26 faceoffs. UAlbany was successful in their only extra-man
opportunity of the day, while Canisius went 0-6 on the man-up unit. John
Carroll played all 60 minutes in goal for UAlbany, making nine saves, while
Sean Callahan stopped 10 shots for Canisius.
