Albany, N.Y.
- Robert Church scored a game-high five goals to lead Drexel to a 13-8 win over
UAlbany in non-conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at John
Fallon Field. With the loss, the Great Danes fall to 0-2 on the season, while
Drexel improves to 1-1.
Church kicked off the scoring for
the Dragons just over three minutes into play, getting an assist from Kyle
Bergman. Bergman then tallied the second goal for Drexel with 7:02 left to play
with an unassisted shot past UAlbany goalkeeper John Carroll. Matt Cushing won
the ensuing face off for UAlbany, and freshman Lyle Thompson got the Great
Danes on the board seven seconds later. Church assisted on Drexel's next goal
by Ryan Belka with 2:24 to go, but UAlbany scored the last two tallies of the
first period, getting markers by Miles Thompson and Joe Resetarits.
The third Thompson on the UAlbany
roster, Ty, got in on the scoring action to start the second quarter, taking an
assist from Lyle to give the Great Danes their first lead of the game with
10:03 to play. However, Church and Bergman combined for the next two goals to
put Drexel back on top, 5-4, with 3:53 on the clock in the first half. Ty Thompson
found the back of the net at 2:43 to tie the score for the third time, but
Church's third goal and a man-up tally by Brendan Glynn sent Drexel into
halftime with a 6-5 advantage.
The Dragons took a two-goal lead to
start the third with an unassisted shot by Brian Teuber. Resetarits completed
his hat trick with UAlbany's next two goals, pulling UAlbany back within one,
8-7. Church finished once again for Drexel to end the third quarter, giving the
Dragons back their two-goal advantage.
Drexel scored the first three goals
of the final quarter to put some distance on the scoreboard. Miles Thompson
took an assist from Resetarits at 2:49 to pull within 12-8, but despite a
two-minute unreleasable penalty on Drexel, the Great Danes could not connect on
several late shots. Bergman scored the final goal of the game with under a
minute to go to set the final score.
UAlbany out-shot Drexel, 37-30,
including a 12-3 advantage in the third quarter. The Great Danes also held a
32-26 advantage in groundballs. The Dragons won one more face off than the
Great Danes, 13-12, and went 1-of-3 on extra-man opportunities, while UAlbany
was 0-for-4 with the man-up unit. Carroll made four saves between the pipes for
UAlbany, while Drexel's Mark Manos proved to be the difference in the net for
the Dragons, stopping 14 of UAlbany's shots on goal.
UAlbany will return to action on
Saturday, March 3, visiting Yale in non-conference action.
