Ty Thompson Keys Decisive Run in UAlbany's Win Against Siena in Capital Region Matchup

Loudonville, N.Y. - Freshman Ty Thompson scored three times, all in a third-quarter outburst, to lead UAlbany to a 12-10 victory over Siena in a battle between Capital Region programs on Tuesday, April 26 at Siena Turf Field. The Great Danes ended a four-game losing streak.
     In a contest that featured five ties and four lead changes, Siena (10-4) tallied three consecutive goals to start the third quarter and build an 8-6 margin. Danny Martinsen curled to the middle and sent a shot inside the left post. Bryan Neufield, who leads the nation with a 49-game, point-scoring streak, followed with a pair of goals. The first score came with the man-advantage and the second on a low underhanded delivery.
     UAlbany (5-9) responded with five in a row over a span of less than four minutes. Ryan Feuerstein intercepted a clearing pass to set up Rocky Bonitatibus's goal that ignited that stretch. Thompson got the equalizer when he put back a rebound after Saints goalkeeper Tom Morr stopped Matt Mackenzie's initial attempt.
     The Great Danes took a 9-8 lead when Joe Resetarits, who had three goals and one assist, nailed a shot from the left side into the top far corner in an extra-man situation. Thompson finished off the decisive run with a pair one minute and five seconds apart. He converted Brian Caufield's pass after a failed clear, before Resetarits caused another turnover and hit the cutting freshman from behind the net.
     The Saints cut the deficit to two goals twice in the final period. Chris Roth, who had two goals and one assist, moved around a short-stick midfielder from the left and fired inside the right post. UAlbany goalkeeper Edmund Cathers kept the Great Danes ahead with six of his 13 saves in the stanza. He stopped both Roth and Colin Clive on a bang-bang play with 1:25 remaining.
     "We've had some great wins and some disappointing losses, but we didn't panic," said UAlbany coach Scott Marr, whose team avenged last year's one-goal loss in this series. "Our attack rode well and we hustled. Matt Mackenzie sparked us (in the face-off circle) and we won some possessions."
     Siena held a 3-1 advantage after the opening quarter. Roth collected a ground ball and sent a 12-yard laser into the net to put his team ahead. Chris D'Alberti, who tallied a pair of goals, followed with a shot inside the right post after gathering Martinsen's pass from behind the cage.
     The Great Danes ran off a string of four straight goals to begin the second stanza. Caufield had a hand in both goals that tied the contest, including an extra-man conversion by Resetarits. Miles Thompson, Ty's cousin, put his team in front by rolling around a defender from the left. Feuerstein then broke up a pass that led to a transition goal by midfielder Kyle Crotty, his first of the season, and a 5-3 lead.
     Siena's John Rogener spun around a short-stick defender to score inside the left post, before D'Alberti drew his squad even at five apiece following a UAlbany turnover. The Great Danes took a 6-5 lead to the intermission. Miles Thompson, who totaled one goal and three assists, had his shot blocked, but the freshman corralled the loose ball and found Resetarits, who sent a blast from right inside the far post.
     "We worked on riding every day," explained Caufield, a senior who had two goals and two assists. "It gave us second chances on offense and we were able to capitalize. The freshmen played well and kept their composure."
