Women's Soccer Drops Season Opener to UNLV, 5-2, at Las Vegas Invitational

Las Vegas, Nev. - Senior forward Ashleigh Shoughro registered four goals, including a natural hat trick, in leading UNLV to a 5-2 victory over UAlbany on Friday, Aug. 27 at the Las Vegas Invitational from Peter Johann Memorial Field.
     Sophomore Shayla Bergeron, who transferred to UAlbany from Duquesne, got the Great Danes on the board just 3:10 into the contest when she tracked down a loose ball and fired a shot past the Rebel goalkeeper from the top of the six-yard box for her first collegiate goal. Defender Casey Marks was credited with an assist on the play.
     However, the Rebels answered right back when Shoughro took a through ball from Macy Jo Harrison and finished with a strike to the far post just 75 seconds later to tie the match at 1-1. Harrison found Shoughro again in the 39th minute to give the hosts a one-goal advantage at the break.
     UNLV (2-0) came out firing to start the second half and doubled its lead in the 60th minute when Shoughro collected a loose ball and banked it off the crossbar and over the goal line to complete the natural hat trick. After Colette Jepson put away her own rebound in the 76th minute, Shoughro became the first Rebel to net four goals in a single match when she placed a shot to the far post from inside the six to give the hosts a 5-1 lead and extra insurance. UAlbany co-captain Chrissy Klepper netted a late marker by finishing a pass from freshman Becky Bakich to produce the final outcome.
     Sophomore goalkeeper Breanna Maggio turned away six shots of the 25 shots she faced in the losing effort for UAlbany. UNLV's Kylie Wassell made four saves on nine opportunities to earn the victory.
     UAlbany (0-1) wraps up play at the Las Vegas Invitational on Sunday afternoon against Portland State at 1:30 p.m. ET. The Vikings registered a 3-2 double-overtime victory over Louisiana-Monroe in the tournament's earlier match.
