No. 15 Johns Hopkins Halts Four-Game Skid in Men's Lacrosse Victory Against UAlbany

Baltimore, Md. - Freshman midfielder John Ranagan scored three times and Steven Boyle and Michael Kimmel each added two goals and three assists, as Johns Hopkins snapped a four-game skid with a 19-7 victory over UAlbany on Saturday, April 10 before a homecoming crowd of 4,508 at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays are No. 15 in the USILA poll and ranked No. 17 by Nike/Inside Lacrosse.
Johns Hopkins (5-5) led 3-1 midway through the second quarter, but then broke the game open by scoring four times in a two-minute-and-11-second span. Tom Palasek beat a defenseman and went low from left of the crease to start that run. All-America attackman Kyle Wharton followed 31 seconds later when Kimmel set him up with a long left-to-right crossing pass following a UAlbany turnover. Freshman Lee Coppersmith dodged from the top and converted a bounce shot from the left. Wharton completed the outburst by connecting on a high shot off a curl move from right of the cage.
UAlbany (2-8) took a 1-0 lead with 6:08 left in the first quarter when Daley Baker scored the first of his two goals by drilling a shot just under the crossbar off a short cross from Dwayne Stewart. The Blue Jays came back with three unanswered over the next three-plus minutes. Tim Donovan spun to his left shoulder to bounce a shot into the cage, before Zach Palmer put his team ahead from the left of crease by scoring after several fakes. Ranagan dodged a defensive midfielder to nail a jump shot from the left side with 2:48 remaining.
The teams traded goals in a back-and-forth third quarter. The Great Danes closed the gap to 10-4 on man-down goal by senior Dave Brock. Defenseman Mark Kelly cleared the zone with a bounce pass to the streaking attackman who ripped a shot from right of the cage. The Blue Jays, who had dropped four straight to national top-10 opponents, including No. 1 Virginia, answered with pair of goals. John Greeley came uncovered on the left side when Ranagan crossed the ball with a skip pass. Boyle, an All-America attacker, came around Palmer's pick to tally his team's 12th goal.
With the outcome decided in the fourth quarter, both teams unloaded their benches. The Blue Jays, who have won nine national championships and made 38 consecutive NCAA appearances, found the net three times in a 27-second span to push the lead to double figures. Boyle scored his 24th of the season and then hit defenseman Chris Lightner on the front doorstep with a pass from behind for a 16-6 lead with 9:17 to play.
JHU's Wharton finished with two goals and one assist, while Palmer scored twice. UAlbany's Brock had two goals and one assist. Goalkeeper John Carroll made 15 saves before coming out of the game early in the final period. The Great Danes have less than 24 hours to regroup as they meet Vermont in an America East Conference matchup at John Fallon Field on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
