No. 19 Massachusetts Pulls Away in Final Quarter in Men's Lacrosse Win Against UAlbany

Amherst, Mass. - Ryan Liebel scored a pair of goals in the fourth quarter as 19th-ranked Massachusetts pulled way for an 11-6 victory over UAlbany on Tuesday, March 9 at Garber Field.
Massachusetts (3-1) led 6-5 heading into the final period. The Minutemen, who are ranked in the USILA coaches poll and are receiving votes in the Inside Lacrosse media poll, tallied twice in a one-minute-and-17-second stretch. Freshman Will Manny connected on an extra-man opportunity when he turned around from right the cage off a feed from Anthony Biscardi. Liebel, a junior midfielder, then scored on a breakaway after the Great Danes turned the ball over at midfield on a bad exchange between Derek Kreuzer and Rocky Bonitatibus.
After Joe Pompo fired a shot into the cage from the left side to cut the deficit to 8-6, UMass exploded for three unanswered over a four-minute span. Bobby Hayes, who had two goals and two assists, scored from the top off Manny's pass from behind the net. Art Kell set up Liebel in transition following a UAlbany turnover for a four-goal lead with 7:16 to play.
UMass goalkeeper Tim McCormack made four of his seven saves in the third quarter to keep the contest tied at four apiece and turned back a pair of low shots from the left side by Matt Johnson. The Minutemen finally took their first lead of the game when Kell came open in the middle of the zone after a scramble for a loose ball on the left side of the box. Kell, a sophomore attack who totaled two goals and three assists, ripped a shot into the left side of the cage from the slot for a 6-4 advantage.
"We dominated the third quarter in terms of time of possession and shooting and had nothing to show for it," said UAlbany coach Scott Marr, whose team committed 22 turnovers in falling to 0-4 overall. "Any time you are struggling your margin for error is small. You can't do things that are going to get you beat in close ball games."
In the first quarter, UAlbany broke a 1-1 tie on back-to-back goals by Kreuzer and Joe Resetarits. Defenseman Mark Kelly hit a streaking Mike Finnegan on a clearing play and the defensive midfielder fed Resetarits at the top of the crease. Early in the second period, Pompo dumped a pass to Resetarits and the sophomore spun to his right shoulder for a 4-1 lead.
The Minutemen responded with three consecutive goals over a six-minute span to draw even by halftime. Hayes, a preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association midfielder, slammed off a shot off the goalkeeper's stick from the point in closing the gap to 4-3 midway through the quarter. Biscardi got the equalizer with a blast from the right side after his team gained possession with an offsides call.
"We wanted to sit back in the zone and have them take far shots," explained UAlbany goalkeeper John Carroll, who made 14 of his career-high 19 saves in the opening half. "I saw the ball well and our intensity level was high. I thought we improved defensively today and are headed in the right direction."
Ryan Hantverk also had two goals for the Minutemen, who were coming off a 13-12 loss to Yale in their last outing four days ago. UAlbany's Resetarits scored three times and Kreuzer added a pair.

Paw Prints:  UAlbany was playing its second consecutive national top-20 team ... the Great Danes are 14-36 all-time against top-20 programs at the Division I level ... sophomore John Carroll had a career-best 19 saves, two better than his previous high against Drexel last season ... Brian Caufield saw his 26-game, point-scoring streak come to end ... Caufield owned the nation's fourth-longest mark heading into the contest.
